    Modern Mariner's Compass

    Strip Pieced

    Zoom lecture by

    Robin Long

    Wednesday, December 13, 2023

    7:00pm - 8:00pm (Arizona Time)

Join Robin to hear a bit about her quilting journey and how she came up with her rulers and strip piecing method to bring the mariners compass into the 21st century.

You will hear her talk about the three facets her method including her modern technique, modern projects (not your typical mariner's compass quilts!), and the  modern support she provides to help folks be successful.

You'll see dozens of beautiful quilts and be inspired to see where your compass will take you!

    Speaker

What started as a quest to make a Mariner’s Compass quilt for her submarine officer husband, Robin Long took an idea she had in 1992 and launched Robin Ruth Design in 2015. She has developed a line of revolutionary rulers, books, patterns, and technique for making STRIP PIECED mariner’s compass blocks and projects – that’s right, NO PAPER PIECING!

      Creating Contrast in Your Quilts

      Zoom lecture by

      Jennifer Houlden

      Thursday, February 1, 2024

      6:00pm -7:00pm (Arizona Time)

      Adding the WOW Factor

One of the keys to great art work and quilts is colour and contrast.

This trunk show explores the effective use of contrast to create dimension, movement and visual harmony while supporting the initial attraction of colour in great quilt designs.

Using contrast in the form of fabrics with different textures, patterns and value is one of the first steps to creating contrast in quilts and textile art. Adding embellishments such as thread play, couching, beading, painting, and other mixed media can also create contrast by adding dimension and texture within the piece. Most importantly a design or concept is needed to expand on. Using some or all of these different techniques - the ideas will be never ending.

Join Jen as she explores the world of contrast and learn a few tips, tricks and techniques that you can incorporate into your quilt making and art to boost the contrast in your work.

And learn how you can achieve that WOW factor in your quilts.

      About Jennifer Houlden

In 2011, Jennifer developed her own label, Quilts by Jen and began teaching, lecturing, designing and creating for herself and others. She has been sharing her passion for quilting with guilds and shops in Southern Ontario and further afield thanks to virtual learning.

Her love of color, texture and movement are elements that make her art come alive. She strives for the illusion of movement within her work along with a careful balance of lines, hue and value.

Perfect precision is not required to create this stunning sunflower. With Jen's expert instruction, you will explore the world of colour to select fabrics for the flower, cut and sew your strips then cut and sew again, and last but not least arrange your strips to create a wave-like effect (the Bargello). Transform the Bargello into an amazing sunflower adding the finishing touches with free motion zigzag.

Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or a beginner, you’ll leave this workshop with a beautiful Bargello Sunflower quilt that you can proudly display in your home or gift to that favourite someone who loves sunflowers.

What colour is your flower going to be?

      Leave Quilts, Not Fabric

      Zoom lecture by

      Jenny Kae Parks

      Wednesday, April 10, 2024

      6:30pm - 7:30pm (Arizona Time)

Jenny Kae shares her thoughts about a heartbreaking experience from her days working at a local quilt shop. Then she offers several practical ways to finish UFO’s and clean up your stash. This story touches the quilter’s heart and is not to be missed

      Learn more about Jenny Kae:

I am living the dream! I get to spend my days working with beautiful fabrics, beautiful designs and beautiful people. AND I get to share about something I love.

I started working at a local quilt shop. Dream job! I was working with colors and fabrics and arrangements all day. Customers ask lots of quilting questions. I guess if you work in a quilt store, they expect you to know how to quilt, go figure. My manger said they needed someone to teach classes! Ohohoh! Pick me! Pick me!

Then, my manager called me said this fabric company wanted me to film a couple videos showing how to use their fabric. I about fell over!  I thought "YesIWantTo!!!" Then I thought, "Be cool, Jenny, be cool!". I said in a very calm voice, "Yes, I would love to.".

That is how I ended up here.
