Have you been dreaming of making a customized quilted jacket for yourself?

Maybe you think you don't have the clothing construction skills or experience to give you confidence to start this project.

Everyone will have a front row seat! In this lecture, Diana will discuss the ins and outs of making your own custom-fitted quilted jacket or coat using her pattern which comes in many sizes. She will go in depth on the pattern, how to take measurements for the best fit, go over several different finishing methods, and talk about adding collars and hoods. Get inspired with plenty of ideas for customization. Bring your questions and ideas for your coat as there will be plenty of time for discussion. Have your measuring tape handy for personalized assistance with finding your correct size.

Sara Nishiura grew up in Detroit where she learned to sew from her mother and gained a love of geometry from her father. Her grandparents were great builders, painters, stitchers, weavers and gardeners who taught her that making things is one of the greatest imperatives, privileges, and pleasures in life. She works with vintage and recycled materials on 100% cotton new backings, hand quilting each piece. In this lecture and trunk show, Sarah will show us her incredible quilts and discuss their evolution within her quilting story.

Sarah Nishiura is a Chicago based quiltmaker who utilizes traditional techniques to craft quilts out of recycled and vintage materials. Inspired by numerous textile traditions including 19th and early 20th century American Quilts, Sarah's work explores and celebrates the infinite possibilities of geometric design. Her quilts have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S. and abroad including the Iowa Quilt Museum, the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Art, the New England Quilt Museum, the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and the Yokohama Quilt Fest in Japan. Her quilts have been featured in numerous magazines and blogs including Martha Stewart Living, QuiltFolk Magazine, Chicago Magazine, and Food and Wine, and they are included in private, corporate, and public art collections throughout the United States. Sarah’s work has been supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Center for Craft. Sarah has an MFA in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BA in visual arts from Brown University.

This interactive Zoom workshop will be split over 2 three hour sessions on Friday and Saturday.

Following Diana's instructive lecture last month on designing and customizing your coat and her pattern, you'll sew your coats together step by step, with clear, close-up instruction so everyone can follow along with confidence. You'll get personalized guidance throughout the process - from measurements and sizing, assembling your quilted pieces, to adding the finishing details.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have a finished (or nearly finished) quilted coat that fits you well and reflects your unique quilting style. It's a fun and rewarding workshop as we watch each other's amazing creations come alive.

Wear your custom coat out into the world!

Required Pattern Purchase (in addition to workshop fee!)
Per Diana's licensing agreement with the pattern maker, each workshop participant must purchase a physical pattern. The pattern cost including shipping is $35. The pattern includes:

A physical pattern with all sizes
A coupon code for the same pattern and all sizes in PDF format
Hard copies of the supply sheet
Instructions for a 12" block and pockets
Required bias tape for your coat (please specify color of bias tape when ordering: white, cream, black, navy, beige, tan, royal blue, pink, or red)

In this presentation Claudia Porter will give us an introduction and overview of the well known quilt component, the Half Square Triangle or HST, and their importance in quilt making. Included is a brief tutorial on making them as well as a discussion on their versatility. She will finish with a trunk show of some of her quilts which feature half square triangles prominently.
